(01) The brief

Maré started life as a newsletter and wanted to become a magazine worth keeping. The editors needed a layout system generous enough for long interviews and photography, yet simple enough for a team of three to produce twice a year.

(02) The approach

A restrained grid, wide margins and a single type family let the photography breathe. Each issue opens with a black and white portrait essay, and a modular set of page templates covers everything from interviews to shop directories, so the team can lay out a 180-page issue without reinventing it.

(03) The outcome

3,000

copies of the first issue, sold out in five weeks

The first print issue sold out its entire run and is now stocked by independent bookshops in eight countries.
